Once your new Roller Shades have arrived it's time for the fun to begin. We'll include screws suitable for mounting into timber, but if you need to mount your shades into dry wall (no studs), tiles, brick or metal we recommend you visit your local hardware store to get the correct fixings.

If you follow these instructions, it should only take about 5 minutes to install your new Roller Shades.

What you'll need!

Before you get started we recommend you have the following tools:

  • Cordless drill (with a 1/8" drill bit and phillips head driver bit)
  • Step ladder
  • Metal tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Spirit level

Step 1 - Check what's in your pack

Once you open the packaging, we recommend you cover the following list off before you get started:

  • 2 x brackets per shade
  • 2 x bracket covers per shade (for outside mount option only)
  • 1 x shade
  • 4 x bracket screws
  • 2 x child safety device screws (chain control option only)
  • 1 x remote control (motorized option if you have selected this item)

It's a good idea to remove the shade from the plastic packaging at this stage, but leave the protective packaging on until the shade is installed.

Step 2 - Mark your brackets

Depending on whether you chose to mount your shade as and Inside or Outside mount will dictate where to place your brackets.

Inside mount brackets are usually fixed to the top of the window reveal at each end. In some instances it may be easier to fix the bracket to the left and right hand side of the reveal essentially side mounting the brackets. Ensure that your brackets are placed with at least 1/2" clearance from the back of the reveal and mark two holes as per the diagram below.

Outside mount brackets are going to be placed as per where your measurements were taken. The width measurement you took will be the outside measurement from bracket to bracket.

If you have window frames place the brackets in the top left and right hand coroners of the window frames and mark two holes for each bracket.

If your windows do not have window frames you will need to measure 1-1.5" (depending on how much you originally added for your order) wider than your window on each side and 3" above the height of the window. Place the brackets where they will site and mark them in two places with a pencil.

Step 3 - Pre drill bracket holes

Using you 1/8" drill bit, make a hole about 1" deep where you have made your pencil markings.

Step 4 - Screw in your brackets

Using your phillips head drill bit, attach the brackets with 2 screws each.

Step 5 - Clip in the shade

Starting at the pin end of the shade, place the pin in the middle of the bracket and push the blind about 1/2" toward the bracket. You should then be able to hook the drive end of the shade into the other end. One installed the pin should be pressing firmly into the pin end bracket.

Once the shade is in, use a spirit level to make sure the shade is in square. You may need to take the shade down and adjust the brackets slightly to get this right.

One the shade is in place, remove the excess packaging.

For an outside mount shade you can now attach the bracket covers.

Step 6 - Fix the child safety or program your motor

Once your shade is installed it's time to get the controls setup. For motorized shades, follow the programming instructions here. Ensure that once you pair the remote control you test the shade fully before locking in the upper and lower limits.

For chain operated Roller Shades you will need to fix the child safety device into the window reveal or wall with two screws. One again the screws provided are suitable for fixing into timber. For all other fixing types you will need to consult your local hardware store to ensure you are using the correct method.

For the chain safety device, ensure that the chain is pulled reasonably tight before you screw the device in. The safety device works under tension and will be difficult to operate if there is slack in the chain.

Pro tips

  1. If you want to change the control side of your shade, you can do this easily by sliding out the control and pin end components. Your brackets are universal so you wont need to change them over to do this.
  2. If the fabric on your shade tracks off to one side when you roll it up and down, you can fix this by rolling the shade all the way to the tube and applying one or two layers of masking tape to the aluminium tube on the side opposite to where the fabric is rolling. We do recommend that you give your shade a few days and uses to settle as it may only be tracking off due to movements in transport.
  3. If your shade is buckling ask you wind it up and down, check with a spirit level that it has been installed straight. Your shade will have a decent amount of tolerance to this, however as most homes move over time you may find that your windows are out of square and some minor adjustments are needed.
