How to measure Cellular Shades

Our custom Cellular Shades are suitable to be mounted either within the window reveal (INSIDE mount) or outside the window reveal as a Outside mount. Because the head rail is about 2 1/4in thick, we recommend that you have 2 1/2in clearance within your reveal for a recess fit.

Once you've decided where you'd like your shades to sit, follow the relevant instructions below.

Measuring for an INSIDE MOUNT

1. Make sure you have at least 2 1/2in of clearance inside your window reveal. This will allow for the entire shade to sit in the reveal for optimum thermal insulation. 

2. Because of the space the shade takes up, you will need to make sure there are no obstructions thought the window for clearance. Obstructions could include window winders or tiles within the reveal.

3. Measure the width across the top of the window reveal from left to right (see diagram below). If you need to round down your measurement to the nearest 1/8in. This will be your WIDTH measurement.

4. Measure the height of the reveal from the top to the bottom. Record the measurement to the nearest 1/8in. This will be your DROP measurement.

Measuring for an OUTSIDE MOUNT

1. If your window has an architrave, this will be the best spot to mount the shade when it comes time to install. If your window doesn't have an architrave, measure the opening of your window (as per recess fit above) and add 4-6in to the width and 6-8in for the drop.

2. Measure the width across the top of the window frame (architrave) from left to right to the nearest 1/8in (round up if necessary). This will be your WIDTH measurement.

3. Measure the height of the window frame/ architrave from top to bottom and record this measurement to the nearest 1/8in. This will be your DROP measurement.

Things to remember

• Always take measurements to the closest 1/8in. For Inside mount measurements round down. For Outside mount measurements round up.
  
  
• Always use a metal tape measure.
  
  
• Keep an eye out for obstructions like door handles, skirting boards or tiles within a reveal. If you're unsure about how they might impact your shade feel free to send us an email to hello@shadeit.com and we'll be sure to help.
  
  
• When working at heights make sure you are safely using a suitable ladder.
  
  
• If you are finding it difficult controlling the tape measure (especially when you're up a ladder), make sure you ask someone to help.
