How to install Roman Shades
5 min read
Once you have received you new Roman Shades, it's time to get them installed. We've include screws suitable for mounting into timber in your delivery, but if you need to mount your shades into dry wall (no studs), tiles, brick or metal we recommend you visit your local hardware store to get the correct fixings.
If you follow these instructions, it should only take about 5 minutes to install your new Roman Shades.
What you'll need!
Before you get started we recommend you have the following tools:
- Cordless drill (with a 1/8" drill bit and phillips head driver bit)
- Step ladder
- Metal tape measure
- Pencil
- Spirit level
Step 1 - Check what's in your pack
Once you open the packaging, we recommend you check against the following list before you get started to ensure you have everything you need:
- Brackets - 2 x for shades less than 36" wide, 3 x for shades 36" to 54", 4 x for shades 54" to 84"
- 1 x shade
- 2 x bracket screws per bracket
- 2 x control handle (attaches to bottom rail)
- 1 x remote control (motorized option if you have selected this item)
It's a good idea to wait until you're ready to clip in your shade before you remove the protective plastic packaging.
Step 2 - Attach Pleat stiffeners
If the Pleat Stiffeners are not pre-attached, snap them onto the bottom hem as illustrated, by pressing down firmly on each end of each stiffener. Don not press down in the center of the stiffener as it can break. The bottom pleat must have rigidity in order for the shade to function properly.
Step 3 - Mark your brackets
Your shade may be installed either inside the window frame or outside the window frame. A mounting bracket should be positioned about 1" to 6" from each end of the head rail. For wider shades that require 3 or more brackets, these should be spaced evenly between the two outermost brackets. Always position the brackets such that there is no interference with the cords and mechanisms inside the headrail.
Inside mount brackets are usually fixed to the top of the window reveal. Space out your brackets evenly as per the instructions above and make a mark with your pencil through the top holes at the top of each bracket.
Outside mount brackets are going to be placed as per where your measurements were taken.
The brackets need to be spaced evenly across at the height at which you measured the shade (8" if you followed our how to measure guide), with the widest brackets being placed about 1"- 6" in from the overall width of the shade. Mark 2 holes at the back of the bracket where you they will be fixed to the wall.
Step 4 - Pre drill bracket holes
Using you 1/8" drill bit, make a hole about 1" deep where you have made your pencil markings.
Step 5 - Screw in your brackets
Using your phillips head drill bit, attach the brackets with 2 screws each.
For outside mount brackets, use your spirit level to ensure all brackets are level with each other. Make adjustments to this as required.
Step 6 - Clip in the shade
Line to top lip on the front of the top rail of the shade up with the top hook of all the brackets. You should then be able to apply a small amount of pressure to activate the springs and roll the back of the head rail of the shade into the brackets. As you reduce the pressure, you should feel the shade click into place.
If you need to remove the shade, this can be done by applying pressure to the front of the head rail of the shade and rotating the back out from the brackets.
Step 6 - Fix control handle or program your motor
Once your shade is installed it's time to get the controls setup. For motorized shades, follow the programming instructions here. Ensure that once you pair the remote control you test the shade fully before locking in the upper and lower limits.
For cordless shades, attach the handles to the bottom of the shade as illustrated.
Divide the width of the shade by 4, and place a handle that distance from each end of the shade. The handles are designed to minimize contact with the shade fabric.
Raising the Shade (cordless)
SLOW is the most important word in achieving proper operation of your cordless shade. To lift the shade, place your hands on the handles with palms facing up. Pull the bottom pleat very slightly away from the window and then push upwards slowly. The pleats should fold like an accordion. If the bottom pleat is pushed straight up, it will tend to go behind and overlap the other pleats which prevents the shade from operating properly. If the bottom pleat is pulled too far, it likewise will not function properly. See the diagram below.
